Great News: @Birva Wins 2026 3MT
Great news from our master's thesis student @Birva Sevak!

She is an outstanding student and is the UM-Dearborn campus winner of the 2026 Three Minute Thesis Competition. She will go on to represent our university at the in-person Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools regional competition, which will be held on March 27, 2026, in Kansas City, MO.

Postdoctoral Fellowship (2026–2028)
We warmly welcome Dr. Ali Abubakar, who will join our team as a Postdoctoral Researcher for the 2026–2028 period, starting in July 2026, under The Eric and Wendy Schmidt AI in Science African Faculty Fellowship, hosted by The Michigan Institute for Data and AI in Society (MIDAS), University of Michigan.
This work will focus on advancing AI-driven methodologies, spanning stochastic optimization, Bayesian learning, and reinforcement intelligence, to support resilient, adaptive, and high-renewable power systems in African contexts.
Project: “AI-Driven Adaptive Grids: Stochastic Multi-Objective, Bayesian, and Reinforcement Intelligence for High-Renewable African Power Systems”
We look forward to impactful research outcomes and meaningful collaborations during this fellowship period.

NSF Award Notice
We are excited to announce that our NSF proposal has been awarded in the amount of $380,338 for a 3-year project:
MRI: Track 1 Acquisition of Hierarchical Testing Framework for Power and Energy Systems Supporting Multidisciplinary Research and Education at the University of Michigan-Dearborn.

Congratulations, Akash!
We are proud to celebrate the graduation of our first master’s student, Akash Ashok Mahajan, who has successfully completed his Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence from the Department of Computer and Information Science.
Akash defended his master’s thesis titled: “Uncertainty-Aware Probabilistic Machine Learning for Prediction and Design Optimization in Energy Systems”
During his time with us, Akash also achieved two SCIE journal publications (see our publication list), marking an impressive milestone for both his career and our lab.
Congratulations once again, Akash, on this outstanding achievement!

New PhD Student
Welcome to our group!
Quang-Manh Hoang is the first PhD student in IESLab. He will start his first semester in September 2024. His research focuses on grid-forming inverters, renewable energy sources, and power system operation and control.
